Baotite
This was one of the most rare crystals, for what it is, in the entire Schauss collection of 1200 specimens. Baotite is a super-rare mineral species containing titanium and niobium which rarely occurs in crystals over 1mm. One single pocket produced some giants, such as this among-species-best piece, in perhaps around 2017-18. Note this is a surprisingly heavy specimen, shocking mass in the hand. Alex note says From: Mustafa Ghulam (Namak Mandi, Peshawar, Pakistan), September 13, 2019, at the TGMS Show in Tucson, with label. Illustrated: The Mineralogical Record, Arizona Mineral Collections, 2020; 55(1) (Suppl): 155. Recently featured in the book, Refined Elegance (Mineralogical Record, Nov. 2022) on page 100. Laszlo Kupi photo. Baotite is a rare mineral with the chemical formula Ba4Ti4(Ti, Nb, Fe)4(Si4O12)O16Cl, recognized as having a unique four-fold silicate ring. In the collection purchase, this was (truly) valued at $20,000 by Alex because there simply was no other. Such rare things are worth what the market will bear, and I have adjusted the price accordingly on this one, perhaps to my detriment. It is simply a rarified thumbnail specimen for a rarified collection that needs one.
