Teallite
The Schauss collection was known and prized for the vast number of "best or near best" of species thumbnails that add breadth to a collection of 1200 pieces encompassing over 600 species. A full-sized thumbnail display specimen that displays sharp platy crystals of very metallic and bright silvery gray teallite in an unusually pleasing manner. Teallite is usually found - was, I should say - in tight masses. Freestanding crystals such as this are incalculably rare and date to the 1800s. This is the single most elegant example of the species in any size of which we are aware of - and was known and shown to friends of mine who supported that opinion, such as Bill Pinch and Mark Feinglos, even as Alex bought it Teallite is an uncommon lead-tin sulfide; and the best examples of the species came from Bolivia back in the day of old scientific supply expeditions such as the late 1800s and early 1900s expeditions by the Philadelphia Academy, funded by the Vaux family (and the reason that three species of vauxite-group minerals are named after that family!). Minor wurtzite occurs on either side. This is exceptionally well crystallized for the species and shows beautifully in person. It is hard to convey in photos because it is so reflective. Alex's notes add: Verified by Raman analysis not to be Frankeite (Univ. Arizona). From: Rob Lavinsky (The Arkenstone, Richardson, Texas) with Dr. F. Kranz, Rheinisches Mineralien-Kontor, Bonn, Germany, label (“Nr. 7”), and Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (“20195”) label. Despite its unusual nature, this is one of my personal favorite minerals in the collection. Laszlo Kupi photo.
