Thortveitite
A robust, thick crystal of the very rare scandium-containing mineral species, thortveitite. This is a rare, colorless to greenish mineral named after the Norwegian mineralogist Olaus Thortveit, ((Sc,Y)_{2}Si_{2}O_{7}\).  We have seen thin and slender crystals, but not often one so thick for sale. This is pretty, as they go. It seems broken on one end (broader at base) and contacted atop, but either way it is rough on the tips and displays from the front as shown. It is a significant example of a really interesting species, or it would not have stayed in the Schauss collection. Alex's notes say, Collected in 1941, per old label shown. It looks as if this was found in the type pocket, and from which the study specimen came which was used in the 1942 paper on this new species. Laszlo Kupi photo.
