Weloganite
A stunning example of this very rare Canadian mineral species from the only location, and from the single most significant zone of small pockets by Don Doell and friends in the 1960s or 70s. Weloganite is a bizarre complex zirconium carbonate that ONLY occurs in large crystals at this, the type locality. I am still surprised at this fact, given the prevalence of other carbonate species worldwide, but there you have it. It was not even found and recognized till the 1960s, and now the place is effectively mined out. The crystal stands on its own merits as a particularly choice example of the species, worthy of any fine TN or rarity collection - but there is also a history, although labels are now lost. Alex left us notes saying this was from: Dave Bunk (Dave Bunk Minerals, Denver, Colorado, inventory # T1019), and two Jim Minette index cards (inventory #1019) from when Bunk sold the collection off. Minette acquired the specimen January 1988, paid $240.00 at the time. Minette wrote that the specimen is a “Superb xtl standing off sprigot qtz. xtls. Best TN I've seen for mineral because of setting.” Originally in the collection of Pala Property (10/31/1976) to Leonard Bedale in January 1988 - later, to Minette. Ex. Linn Larsen; Ex. Leonard Bedale; Ex. Ernie Schlichter; Ex. Jim Minette. no collection labels though, survived with piece by the time it reached Alex through another dealer who obtained it in a collection.
