Euchroite
This is a historic specimen from the 1800s, that has passed through numerous collections to arrive with us today! Euchroite from this strange deposit is the best in the world for the species by an order of magnitude, but this is a killer even by those standards, with a metallic luster and rich green-blue color that is hard to describe. It is lustrous like a metallic, and this color and luster is so far beyond the norm that I can say we have never seen one its equal. According to MINDAT: Named in 1823 by August Breithaupt from the Greek euchroia for "beautiful color.". It really has a hint of blue to it as well, which is not conveyed in photos. It is either a long, complexly grown single crystal or a cluster of intergrown crystals that formed around one central crystal. Most are singles, but this is a larger cluster and stands out for that reason in a display. From: Dave Bunk Minerals (Denver, Colorado), February 15, 2009, an Alex Schauss first pick when Dave participated in selling the famous Minette collection. Also with a Robert W. Jones, Jr. label (a rare Bob Jones label!!! Bob passed away, sadly, in 2024 at the age of 100); and original label from turn of the 1900s dealer Lazard Cahn. Between Cahn and Minette, it somehow ended up with Dave Wilber, literally the guru of all things quality in minerals who kickstarted the modern age of mineral collecting. Jim Minette notes this source from 1980 on his index card, which states further: “Largest xtl of this ever seen. Superb. From Lazard Cahn Collection.” Exhibited: One of the 35 displayed specimens that won the 2010 Paul Desautel Trophy for Best Mineral Case in Competition at the Tucson Gem & Mineral Show. This is an often overlooked, very rare copper species that adds color to any collection, but also has a really amazing history as a bonus.
