Axinite-(Fe) on Quartz
When one thinks of Axinite, or what is now Axinite-(Fe), Bourg d'Oisans in Isère, Rhône-Alpes, France is the king of all localities. Not only is it where this species was first discovered, way back in the late 1700s, but the crystals found were magnificent in form, colour and clarity and remain the most desirable of all Axinite-(Fe)'s still. They are not the largest known, but their aesthetics are often unsurpassed. This superb large miniature to small cabinet specimen is an absolute treasure, of really very high quality. The Axinite-(Fe) crystals are perched beautifully upon a small aggregate of Quartz var. Rock Crystal. The Axinite-(Fe) crystals are razor-sharp, well-formed and present a superb saturated brown colour and excellent glassy lustre, but do show light chipping along their edges which is usual for older historic specimens like this. Ex Martin Kershaw Collection.
