Tsumebite (Type Locality) on Quartz
This is a fine specimen of a colorful and rare mineral species from the early finds at Tsumeb, from its first oxidation zone (1890s-1920 or so). Tsumebite was described in the early 1900s from such specimens. It is a sparkling green cluster of tsumebite upon sharply-formed quartz crystals, with the largest crystal being a 2.5 cm spire; and this serves as a visual anchor for this thumbnail. Quartz itself is uncommon enough from Tsumeb, but to have it almost completely coated by a sparkling layer of microcrystalline tsumebite, for which Tsumeb is the TYPE LOCALITY, makes this a rare and exceptional piece for this great locality. A strong thumbnail that sparkles and glows with color, it is important for what it is and where it is from; and would stand out in any Tsumeb suite. NOTE: we have not analyzed this ourselves and to my eye, the closely related species do look the same. At the time that Dr. Pohl catalogued this, the recent discovery to Tsumebite vs. Arsenotsumebite had been published but we cannot say if she adjusted her catalog to match the new recognition of two distinct related species among what had been called simply tsumebite at the time. There is a chance this is, therefore, the arsenian analogue. They are closely related, in any caser, arsentsumebite being named by L. Vesignie in 1958 in allusion to the composition, being the ARSENate analogue of TSUMEBITE (per MINDAT).
