Silverband mine high up on what is termed the 'Escarpment' marking the western edge of the North Pennines range of hills has the reputation of having produced the largest individual crystals of Baryte seen in England. Started underground, the mine was developed opencast from the 1960s until the 1990s. Very few gemmy Baryte crystals were found, but it was the perfect tabular shape and sheer size of crystals for which it is renowned. This huge, 14 cm long and 11.5 cm wide, tabular crystal will take some beating in terms of size. It is not without damage - with a sizable nick half-way along its wedge-shaped termination - but the size and consequent weight of these larger crystals meant that very few were preserved intact. This one weighs in at 2.3 kg and may require additional postage charges. As with all of the larger Baryte crystals from Silverband mine it is not gemmy, but translucent with fairly dull, resinous surfaces. Lots of internal cleavage planes can be seen but it has not been repaired and these add to the character and feel of this dramatic large specimen. A impressive piece of northern English mining history.
