Calcite
Geevor mine at Pendeen near St. Just in Cornwall was one of England's last operating tin mines, eventually closing in 1990. However, the mine is still thriving, but this time as a much-loved tourist attraction for those venturing to the Land's End peninsula. During its final years as an operational mine many fine mineral specimens were recovered to the surface, many of which came from workings extending out deep beneath the seafloor. One of the interesting minerals to come to the attention of collectors was an unusual paper-thin variety of Calcite which was frequently aggregated in rosetted forms and was given the name "Levant Roses" - Levant mine being joined to the Geevor mine workings. This fine small miniature Calcite specimen presents a very nice display of clustered curved thin platy Calcite crystals with an attractive cream-orange colour. The Calcite is in very good overall condition considering its delicate nature and for its size it displays nicely. Ex Mike Brooke Collection, no. MB0205.
