A fabulous and important historic Tsumeb specimen consisting numerous bright orange sprays of ludlockite with minute stottite crystals on germanite ore! The felted, radial sprays of rich burnt orange, acicular ludlockite needles to 6 mm are scattered on the massive, metallic blue-gray germanite ore along with several (less than 1 mm but eye visible), almost black stottite crystals. Amazingly rich, there are over a dozen ludlockite sprays on this piece ranging in size from a few millimeters up to 1.1 cm across! Tsumeb is the type locality for all three of these species! Ludlockite is a rare lead-iron arsenate, stottite is an iron hydroxlgermanate (for which Tsumeb is the type and only locality!) and germanite is a copper-iron-germanium sulfide. An outstanding and colorful Tsumeb combination specimen of ultra-rare species, from famous finds on the germanium level in the late 1960s. This piece is described in the F. John Barlow Collection book on page 303. #2589 in his massive and important collection. This display subcollection for Tsumeb minerals was one of the most important for its time, within the larger collection. The book remains an important reference and historic mineral collecting resource, to this day. Per MINDAT: Named for Frederick Ludlow Smith III (13 August 1939 - 20 December 2014) and Charles Locke Key (1935-2021), (legendary!) mineral dealers who discovered the mineral and provided the first specimens for study (Frederick Ludlow Smith and Charles Locke Key). Mr. Key also has the mineral keyite named after him. Oddly enough, we sold this specimen back in the late 1990s, and it came back recently without the Barlow Collection (paper) label - but I recognized it somehow, and sure enough it had the Barlow sticker with its accession number still glued to the backside! This was confirmed by a quick look in his book.
