Wollastonite and Vesuvianite

A truly unique specimen of the normally "unworthy" mineral, wollastonite, in this case in a quality and style that makes it displayable amidst fancier species! I particularly love these unusual one-off specimens of some strange normally-ugly rock forming mineral that suddenly leaps to a pinnacle of development in a display specimen - even if from only one pocket and find in all the world. This kind of rarity and beauty combined, is to me the best combination in a mineral specimen. The mineral is selcom lustrous or gemmy, or pretty...but here we have all of that, and in combination with a contrasting species as well. This is a relatively large, stout, translucent to gemmy, pretty white crystal of wollastonite is sprinkled with small vesuvianite crystals; and it from the famous Jeffrey Mine in Quebec. Wollastonite is usually seen as coarse cleavage fragments in contact metamorphic deposits (skarns) rarely as well-formed, translucent to locality transparent, mostly euhedral crystals like this one. The crystal is a gorgeous clean white and has relatively wide-spaced, longitudinal striations and it shows terminations at each end: however, the terminations are somewhat obscured by overgrowth from the vesuvianite crystals (a nice contrast, in any case). The vesuvianite crystals just glisten as almost ring-like, bright olive-green clusters around the wollastonite crystal in two places, and as isolated crystal or small groups scattered on the wollastonite. The scintillating vesuvianites are gemmy to translucent and their distinctive color is in contrast to the off-white of the wollastonite crystal. A very showy and unusual specimen from the Jeffrey Quarry! This was purchased from dealer Jordi Fabre, who told us he got it back from a customer he sold it to when they came out in the early 1980s. We had seen only one other of this pocket for sale....it is a small find, and long ago. He thought it might be the best of the find (certainly, from what we have seen, although I do not recall seeing one in the Canadian Museum's holdings to compare with).
