An exceptional and EXTREMELY HISTORIC specimen of hausmannite from the village of Ilfeld in Thuringia, Germany. This specimen is notable for its remarkable crystals. Most hausmannites from this locality are pseudomorphing manganite. To see an example like this is almost unheard of. Even more notable, is the history of this specimen – which dates back to the 1800s. This specimen was sold by the Spang family in 1881 to Charles Bement, one of the all-time great American mineral collectors. Bement sold it to the American Museum of Natural History in 1900, where it resided for 83 years until acquired by Herb Obodda in 1983. It was then acquired by the Spanns in 2011.
