Dolomite cast
Forming a thin plate of what look like glossy pearlescent scales, this Dolomite cast is a classic from the remarkably diverse mineral deposit at Tsumeb mine in Namibia. The large curved lenticular (yet still rhombic) crystals are actually quite thin, forming 'sheets' or layers which have at some point become detached and then rehealed together in unusual positions to create a somewhat domed arrangement. This piece merges mineralogical with sculptural and invites discussion of how exactly it has formed. Pale creamy white in colour, it is its pearlescent lustre that catches ones attention, along with its curious form. There are a couple of scuffs to surface, but it remains a remarkable display specimen from this most important of mines. Ex Weyand collection.
