Here we have a nice chrysoberyl from Espirito Santo. These specimens were famously collected by Alan Caplan in the 1930s who travelled to Brazil to uncover the source of these rare gemstones. The Mineralogical Record Volume 54 #6 has an excellent article on this historic find recounting Alan Caplan’s adventures in his own words. The article truly inspires the aspiring field collector with quotes such as “Before nightfall I had half a grain sack full of crystals”. These specimens were then dispersed across the globe to museums and some of the most prolific collectors of the time. In todays market these specimens rarely come up for sale, and when they do they often command eye watering prices. This specimen features multiple twinning’s, good color, excellent luster, and some gemmy sections. It is a full floater crystal that shows contacts from other crystals that grew pressing against it. Specimen comes with custom acrylic base.
