Smoky Quartz with Hematite on Dolomite
Stocky, doubly-terminated pale smoky-coloured Quartz crystals like these are a classic from the West Cumbrian Iron Mining District in Northern England. Their combination, or association, with layered botryoidal, or bladed specular Hematite, and cream coloured saddle-shaped rhombic Dolomite crystals is iconic to that region. This large miniature specimen from Malcolm Southwood's collection (no. MS 1998.072) is an aggregate of very glassy doubly-terminated Smoky Quartz crystals sat upon a thin Dolomite matrix with a few small clustered glossy black bladed Specular Hematite crystals embedded within the base of the Quartz crystals. The largest doubly-terminated Smoky Quartz crystal reaches an impressive 4.7 cm in length. All of the Quartz crystals are a little 'nibbled' at their terminations and occasionally impacted on their edges, but actually this piece still looks great and represents very large crystals from this classic mineral producing region. This specimen is specifically from Florence mine near Egremont, which was the last of the iron mines to close and one of the most famous mineral localities in the region.
