Fluorapatite on Quartz
The south coast of Cornwall from Rinsey Head to Megilligar Rocks produces some of the most picturesque views in all of Cornwall, as well as some wonderful mineral specimens. The enchanting views are derived from a combination of the rugged cliffs and the industrial mining engine houses perched dramatically upon them. These mines were developed in search of tin within the granite beneath, but the same Godolphin-Tregonning Granite hosts pegmatite minerals including excellent (for the UK) Fluorapatite crystals. This sweet thumbnail specimen is from Malcolm Southwood's collection (no. MS 2010.054), but is much older, coming from J.R. Trantom's collection (no. 1075-E5) who obtained it in 1997 from Gwynant Valley Minerals in North Wales. It features a cluster of teal-blue to blue-grey squat prisms of Fluorapatite, to 5 mm in size, attached to the base of a terminated primatic Quartz crystal with a little Muscovite mica. The main Fluorapatite crystal shows colour-zoning, with thin pale bands at either end, with a wider darker central band. Several of the smaller Fluorapatite crystals are impacted, but the main crystal is in good shape. A small, but superb rarity from this long off-limits collecting locality.
