Azurite with Malachite ps. after Azurite$400.00

The world-famous Tsumeb mine in Namibia has produced many remarkable crystals of Azurite in a range of forms, but compared with other world localities the most distinctive, or typical, are the elongated yet blocky forms. Azurite conforms to the monoclinic structural class, which usually results in bladed crystals, but many of the best larger Azurite crystals from famous worldwide occurrences are more tabular, to almost rhombic in shape. This longer style of crystal from Tsumeb is often associated with a replacement by Malachite, forming Malachite pseudomorphs after Azurite, but this miniature specimen shows partial alteration to Malachite. It comprises two quite well-formed Azurite crystals grown parallel to each other. The larger, at 5 cm in length, is fully terminated at both ends but with is best termination at the end which aligns with the rough (Malachite-altered) base of the second crystal. The second, much shorter crystal is really nicely terminated midway along the first crystal. The other end of the longer crystal is a very different, chisel-shaped termination. These are well-crystallized Azurite crystals with a rich deep blue colour and very glossy surface. If the two crystals presented identical terminations in the same direction I have little doubt that it would be priced considerably higher, but as it stands it is still a really excellent crystallized Azurite from Tsumeb. Ex Weyand collection.
