Here is a large, strikingly sculptural, sharply crystallized specimen of Michigan copper from the Ahmeek No. 2 Mine. Large, equant to slightly elongated crystals of Copper from 0.5 to 2.5 cm have formed a shapely and commanding stacked aggregate on this aesthetic piece. The complex crystals are dominated by the tetrahexahedral form and are dominated by a relatively bright copper-red color accented at the bottom by green stained (malachite?) pieces of matrix incorporated into the growth of the copper. The copper crystals on the top half of the piece are well-formed and distinct and become less so on the bottom half of the piece where they are a bit rough along the edges. The piece is elongate and quite attractive, especially with the large crystals on the top half with the largest at the apex of the piece at one inch! The Ahmeek Mine was an important, active copper mine from the earliest 1900s through the mid-1900s. This piece was clearly old material that went through several collections and we know that George Loud bought from Keith Williams who bought it from Ray S. DeMark (his label notes this and the next bit), who bought from Leo Latoski in 1994. Ray also adds on his label: dodecahedron modified by the trapezohedron, noting the rarity and superb geometry of this crystallography.
