Pyromorphite
This is an exceptional and unusually three-dimensional specimen from the classic, old, Perkiomen Mines in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, much more rare than the ones from Phoenixville! It is a very colorful and aesthetic small cabinet piece with crystals to 1.2 cm that are large for any Pennsylvania pyromorphite! The color is a rich dark olive green with great luster which is atypical for any Pennsylvania locality (although somewhat well known from mid 1800s finds at the nearby Wheatley Mine). The robust crystals richly cover much of the orange-brown, goethite stained matrix and the 1.5 mm to 1.2 cm, barrel-shaped crystals are largely standing up and in random orientation. Some of the larger crystals exhibit slight hoppering. The bottom of the piece is mostly covered with a large patch of drusy, slightly brighter green pyromorphite crystals from 0.5 to 2 cm. It is a beautiful and high quality Pennsylvania pyromorphite! Bought 9/28/2001 from the Russell Buckingham collection. The notes with the specimen indicate that Dick Hauck bought this from Russell Buckingham himself (he lived in NYC area and had a rock shop later in life), and Russ said that he collected it in 1934. Hauck himself is a well known East Coast expert and collector.
