Fluorite on Sphalerite
A big, beautiful cabinet piece from the now-closed Elmwood Mine featuring a half-dozen gorgeous purple fluorite crystals on a small shiver of crystalline, deep red-brown sphalerite. The fluorites range in size from 3.1 to 4.7 cm across and have the superb silky luster you sometimes see in these that is so desirable. The purple color is rich and captivating with the interiors a uniform purple, however, all of the crystals display a stunning, saturated, grape-purple 2.5 mm thick rim, and many crystals have smooth, transparent corners so classic for better Elmwood fluorites. The crystals are mostly transparent to translucent with the surface silkiness slightly concealing their transparency. Super lustrous, ruby-brown sphalerite crystals peek out from underneath the front and left side of the piece for added interest and aesthetics. George Loud bought this from the late David M. Crawford at the Franklin N.J. Show November 1st 1988, when they were coming out in force. A classic find and style from that era.
