The rare iron phosphate mineral Childrenite was first described from an undisclosed locality near Tavistock in Devon in 1823. It has subsequently been identified in a significant number of localities in the vicinity of Tavistock, but the finest British crystals of this species all come from George and Charlotte mine and this specimen, despite being thumbnail in size, really does highlight the quality compared to the other British occurrences. The crystals reach 1.5 mm in size but are exceptionally sharp and super gemmy, with a rich clove-brown to orange-brown colour. Ex Malcolm Southwood collection.
