The silver mines at Kongsberg (King's Mountain) in Norway are legendary amongst mineral collectors for their breathtakingly beautiful specimens of Native Silver. Specimens are usually sculptural aggregates of wires, but rarely they can involve Native Silver replacing Acanthite crystals. Calcite is the usual host mineral. This large miniature specimen has the Calcite host, but is quite different in that it features bright golden Pyrite crystals alongside the Native Silver. This makes for a striking contrast. The Native Silver forms a 2.6 cm tall, somewhat irregular-shaped protrusion rising up dramatically from the top of the specimen. It has a classic darkened patina and alongside its base there is an indication that a crystallized silver sulphide (perhaps Acanthite) might be present. Below this, the Pyrite shines brightly as an aggregate of large modifed cubic crystals. Certainly a very different Kongsberg Native Silver.
