Descloizite
The geochemical conditions at Berg Aukas and a few other smaller localities in Grootfontein District, Otjozondjupa Region, Namibia must have been very different to those experienced anywhere else on Earth. Why? Because Descloizite - lead zinc vanadate is normally an extremely rare mineral species, typically found in microcrystals. However, in Grootfontein District, and in particular at Berg Aukas, Descloizite occurs in larger crystals. These are usually dark cola-brown in colour and bladed, but can be modified in many shapes. This huge display specimen shows how good the quality gets, forming a dense pure branching crystal aggregate of Descloizite reminiscent of a coral. Unlike many larger specimens the crystals are in extremely good condition - contact damage normally being commonplace - making this a museum quality display specimen. With the mine having closed in 1978 this is an older specimen and the likelihood of anything as fine being collected in the future is remote. Big, sculptural, dramatic, and a rare species combine to make this an extremely important piece.
