Smithsonite var. Cobaltian
Lovely, large, lavender-pink colored rhombohedrons of cobalt-rich smithsonite densely cover this large three-dimensional piece of unusual size and quality. The smithsonites are classic-curved rhombs with great luster, beveled edges and finely undulating crystal faces. There are several crystals that are 2 to 2.5 cm across the diagonal and the rest of the crystals are still quite large at 0.5 to 1.5 cm! All of the crystals are transparent to translucent and display some internal reflections. There are two vuggy protected areas on this piece that host these lovely smithsonites along with a couple ridges across the top that host some of the larger crystals. There is some peripheral contacting on the piece and a trace of bruising on a few crystals, otherwise, but otherwise they blend in with the internal reflections of these fine crystals. Overall this cabinet piece is impressive for its big crystals, sharp rhombohedral forms and its aesthetics! We rarely see such preservation in this size, and the material is from the 1960s-1970s. #13984 in the Pohl collection, indicating an early origin. Dr. Erika Pohl-Ströher #13984
