Azurite and Cerussite on Malachite
A colorful Tsumeb combination specimen featuring numerous, glistening royal blue azurite crystals and sprinkled with small, white, cerussite crystals all on contrasting white matrix that is accented by bright green malachite. Small bits of green bayldonite are also present, and indicate that this is likely an older specimen from the first oxidation zone of the mine, from the 1920s or earlier. Several old labels also attend the piece. Dozens of 2.5 to 1.3 cm, brilliant, blocky and complex crystals of azurite covers a radial fibrous, vivid green malachite-coated gray matrix. This is an unusual piece for Tsumeb due to the fact that the azurite grew after the malachite and is not replaced by it! They are completely separated from each other chemically — again, a character of some old discoveries and not typical of more modern finds. The bright blue azurites are speckled with a couple dozen glistening, small (2-4 mm), prismatic cerussite crystals, some of which show twinning. And, again, a nice contrast! There are also a few, 0.5 to 1.4 cm patches of drusy, white, sparkling calcite locally for added interest and contrast. An attractive and colorful Tsumeb combination piece!
