This miniature Smithsonite might not be the most colourful you come across, but is bursting with character. It comes from Berg Aukas in the Grootfontein District, Namibia which is one of the world's most important localities for Smithsonite, but which gets overlooked by its more famous neighbour - Tsumeb mine. Indeed, many Berg Aukas specimens have over the years been wrongly attributed to Tsumeb because they were brought to Tsumeb for sale. This wonderful piece is a pale beige-coloured botryoidal/stalactitic aggregate with a stunning silky lustre, a little like chatoyancy, but just not with the cat's eye effect. Dark brown inclusions scattered across some of the stalactites add to its fascination. It is an incredibly tactile specimen and yet all the main crystal surfaces are free from damage. A very classy smaller Smithsonite.
