Zincian Dolomite Cast

Zincian Dolomite, or zinc-bearing Dolomite, is a less-often seen mineral from Tsumeb mine in Namibia. Dolomite often has a slightly pearlescent lustre but this variety begins to shift towards the greasy lustre seen in Smithsonite - presumably due to the increased zinc content. Not only is this specimen visually attractive, with its pale orange colour and fine lustre, but it is scientifically interesting too. The main display surface features interlocking coarse bladed crystals, but these are casts, or epimorphs, probably after Calcite, but possibly Smithsonite. On the reverse, the hollow openings are sprinkled with small rhombic crystals of Dolomite showing how multiple phases of mineral growth and replacement have taken place. Ex Glyn Cunnick collection.
