Veszelyite on Hemimorphite

This is an extremely rich super-sized thumbnail Veszelyite from Sanguozhuang Pb-Zn mine in Dongchuan District, Kunming, Yunnan, China. This mine has, in recent years, produced the world's finest specimens of Veszelyite - copper zinc phosphate hydrate hydroxide. This small specimen shows the richness of what has been found at that mine. The matrix consists of oxidized veinstone containing Hemimorphite coated with a thin botryoidal crust of white Hemimorphite. The surface of this Hemimorphite is scattered with deep electric blue Veszelyite crystal sprays with a fine resinous to greasy lustre. The Veszelyite forms clustered aggregates of sharp bladed crystals producing fan-like sprays. The sprays reach 5 to 6 mm across, with some aggregated, but most scattered, allowing the white Hemimorphite to form a backdrop to the spectacularly colourful and lustrous Veszelyite crystals. There is minor damage to the Veszelyite around the edges of the specimen but those on the display surface are great. In one corner a small (4 x 5 mm) area contains tiny spheroidal to botryoidal coatings of a pale peppermint green Dongchuanite Group phase - one of the several Type Species recorded from this fascinating mine. A very fine small miniature to giant thumbnail Veszelyite.
