Looking at the extensive coverage of blue on this cabinet-sized specimen you would be forgiven for doubting it being Veszelyite. That is because it is just so exceptionally rich compared to what we used to know for this copper zinc phosphate hydrate hydroxide. The Sanguozhuang Pb-Zn mine in Dongchuan District, Kunming, Yunnan, China has, in recent years, changed this. This wonderfully rich larger specimen is quite dense, having a massive, pale biscuit-coloured matrix (possibly of massive Hemimorphite, although it has not be analysed) coated by, and veined by white crusts of crystallized Hemimorphite. The top surface of the specimen (which was Hemimorphite) is totally encrusted with a layer of deep electric-blue crystallized Veszelyite. The Veszelyite forms extremely glossy tightly clustered fan-like sprays of millimetre-sized crystals. Why, you might ask, is the price so low for the sheer size of this piece? Well, put simply it is the contact damage to several areas of the crystals on the surface. The bruising is slight, but it is there, and so this is reflected in the price. Nevertheless, there are large areas of pristine crystals which look amazing under magnification.
