Chalcocite
Copper workings near the village of M'Passa in Mindouli District, Pool Department, Republic of the Congo produced, back in the 1970s, some of the world's finest Chalcocite crystals with crystals to 2 to 3 cm across, but specimens are rarely seen other than in major museum collections. However, reopening of mines in this area in 2021, resulted in the rediscovery of world-class Chalcocite crystals in large aggregates. The crystals take the form of thin hexagonal platy crystals with sectile layers and this large miniature specimen is a magnificent example with some of the crystals appearing to show complex intergrowth or twinning. The largest Chalcocite crystal reaches a staggering 4 x 3.5 cm across, but they are all very sizable and well-formed crystals for this species.
