Fluorite (pegmatite origin)
This unusual specimen of fluorite comes not from the usual kind of fluorite deposits (often mined in bulk, industrially, with our specimens as a byproduct). Rather it comes from the kinds of deposits that yield gem crystals and gemstone species (called a pegmatite). More common in Pakistani deposits, these pegmatite-origin fluorites are scarce elsewhere. Also, these deposits tend to be complex stews of chemicals as they form, imparting wonderful colors to the fluorites, as you see here. This unusual teal-blue-green piece is from such a find, in the early 2000s, which I purchased at the time from a Brazilian source. These are rare in that they are of pegmatitic origin — found in a pegmatite instead of a typical style of fluorite deposit with massive huge veins and formations. Pegmatite fluorite deposits are worldwide, smaller, and more desired. They often have strong colors due to the unique and varied chemistry of each pegmatite, compared to carbonate replacement deposits where they often form. Also, pegmatite fluorite deposits rarely yield quantity, making each piece more valuable in context. As a bonus, note the strong fluorescence here.
