Cerussite on Quartz
The Grand Reef is a classic USA locality for cerussite but, since most specimens date from the 1970s or before, few collectors today ever see a good one — much less, a matrix piece of significance. This is a very rare cabinet specimen of Arizona cerussite, with several clusters of crystals all over it. Notably, it features a dramatic reticulated twinned cluster (to 4 cm across) AND the other habit of cerussite for which this locality is known, a sort of pointy and unusual habit that is probably a cyclic twin. Both crystal morphologies are on the same piece, which is very rarely seen in cerussite from any locality. If not for the second habit (and the provenance), it would be hard to believe the larger reticulated cluster is not from Morocco. Likely collected in the 1960s-70s from what else we have seen, but it is impossible to know for sure (certainly, the mine is closed and nothing has come out in recent decades). All on a sparkling and quartz rich matrix. A beautiful piece that is somehow hard to convey in photos, so please do see the video. From the significant and long-held collection of Arizona specialist, Les Presmyk.
