Azurite on Smithsonite
For a less well-known locality the Hidden Treasure mine might just be aptly named. Situated in Toole County a short distance to the southwest of Salt Lake City this abandoned lead-zinc-copper-silver mine has produced some very pretty specimens of supergene secondary zinc and copper carbonates. This large miniature specimen is no exception. It appears to be dominantly layered grey Smithsonite which is terminated on its upper surface in a more bluish-grey botryoidal Smithsonite with a lovely greasy to waxy surface lustre. Upon this surface is a rich, but not total, coating of extremely glossy deep blue rosetted aggregates of Azurite to about 3 mm in diameter. It really is rather pretty.
