Ray mine in the Dripping Spring Mts., Pinal Co., Arizona, USA is a huge active copper mine which has produced some stunning specimens of Quartz coating Chrysocolla. This beautiful stalactitic specimen features the classic Ray mine association of Quartz coating Chrysocolla. The Chrysocolla is predominantly very dark green, but has turquoise-blue layers internally. Interestingly, the layer of encapsulating Quartz is extremely fine-grained, a little like Chalcedony, and is a wonderful pale baby blue colour. This does not appear to be influenced by an underlying pale blue layer of Chrysocolla, but perhaps by inclusions of Chrysocolla within the Quartz itself. The stalactitic form is very pretty and displays really nicely, especially with its microscopic scaly surface texture. Cracks visible on the surface are from the natural geological processes during the formation of these secondary minerals and are stable.
