This is huge and spectacular crystal for this rare species! We are labeling it as Eudialyte, however it could be the more rare relative: Kentbrooksite. Both are rare and chemically complex sodium-calcium-rare earth element-manganese-iron-zirconium-niobium silicate hydrate species and this substantial crystal is from the Khibiny Massif - the classic alkaline intrusive complex in the Kola Peninsula of Russia. This robust, well-formed, trigonal crystal measure 4.3 cm in maximum dimension and 2.2 cm in thickness! Regardless of which closely related variety this is, it is exquisitely displayed and fully formed, large, and quite rare in this display-quality style from the region. They are thought to have been collected by Russian museum expeditions since at least the mid 1900s, and we have even seen examples from the Fersman Museum collected recently by friends of ours there (although much smaller in size!). Without a careful analysis, we cannot assign this to be the more rare kentbrooksite, although the darker color (as opposed to more pink-red) indicates it might be. It is pinkish brown with quite a few thin, black needles of Aegirine as accents, showing as inclusions in all of the faces. Parts of the crystal have classic igneous matrix attached and it too has the inclusions of Aegirine as well. This is just a remarkably large crystals for ANY rare species and especially for this location where crystals over a few centimeters are rare.
