Babingtonite on Calcite
People often forget that the New Jersey quarries actually produced some world class minerals! This is a classic combination of Massachusetts minerals showing jet-black Babingtonite crystals perched on white to pale greenish calcite for great contrast. This is a historic eastern U.S. locale for Babingtonite and it is significant for collectors favoring this region, and in fact is a major classic for any USA collection, now almost unobtainable. The five, lustrous, well isolated, black Babingtonites are from 1.3 to 2 cm in length and taper to pyramidal modifications at each end. They have an almost curvaceous form and are brilliantly lustrous! It sits nicely for display on its own. Originally from the F. John Barlow collection, we sold this to Paul Stahl around 1999 after the Barlow collection came for sale, with it now returned to us.
