Pyrite on Marcasite
This specimen is a large and splendid example of the unique pseudomorphs exclusive to the Nanisivik Mine that shows epitaxial growths of sharply-formed, bulky Pyrite draped across large blades of Marcasite, which have also pseudomorphed into Pyrite. Many of these epitaxial growth-pseudomorph combinations resemble brassy plates that have a strong metallic luster and reach up to an impressive 6.0 centimeters across. No new material has been produced from this locality since the mine closed in September of 2002. Incredibly, this is one of the northernmost mines in the world, off the coast of Baffin Island, one of the many islands that line the path of the Northwest Passage. This piece comes with a custom acrylic base.
