Diamond in Conglomerate

As the locality's name suggests, Diamantina (originally called Arraial do Tijuco) is home to some of the most highly sought-after Diamonds to come from Brazil, quickly becoming the central hub of Brazil's Diamond rush during the 18th to 19th centuries. Unlike most other localities around the world, these rare and highly coveted Diamonds are deposited in large conglomerates, which occurred after they were brought to the Earth's surface through natural geological processes. This cabinet-sized example features a sharp, colorless Diamond octahedron (reaching 0.7 centimeters across) nestled in an unusual conglomerate matrix. Along with being gemmy, the crystal has a glassy luster and slightly fluoresces under shortwave UV light. To come across a specimen of this quality is an oddity, as many of the specimens produced from Diamantina were exploited for their higher-valued contents.
