Spessartine with Fluorite on Muscovite and Microcline
Wushan Spessartine mine, Tongbei, Fujian Province, China is renowned for having produced some of the world's finest crystallized Spessartine specimens and with this piece you can see why. Confusingly, it is not so much a mine, but a series of quarry-like excavations from which the Spessartine is extracted from miarolitic cavities in granite. What sets Wushan apart, is the rich intensity of the orange colour of its Spessartine but also of course their perfect crystal form - in this case dodecahedra. This beautiful cabinet-sized display specimen features superb Spessartine crystals to 0.9 cm across, with exceptional shape and gracefully spread out across the matrix thus allowing each individual crystal to be appreciated, rather than being crowded out which is often the case from this locality. Added to its display are several 'books' of dark coloured mica (possibly Muscovite) and a couple of colourless Fluorite crystals.
