Pyromorphite
I often say that I like to feel the weight of a Pyromorphite specimen to tell its quality, but in this instance the Pyromorphite is coating a very porous Quartz veinstone which adversely affects its weight. This cavernous Quartz vein material with coatings of black manganese oxides and lime-green Pyromorphite is classic Iron Crag at the head of Roughton Gill in the Caldbeck Fells, although it is not specifically recorded as such. The Pyromorphite forms glossy acicular crystals and radiating sprays sat on the Quartz within cavities. Despite not being 'solid' dense Pyromorphite the crystals on this piece are extremely fine. One particular cavity, measuring 2.7 x 2.5 cm, looks stunning, with immaculate sprays of beautiful lime-green crystals - the classic colour for Iron Crag. Although there are no details, I would expect that this piece was collected sometime between the 1970s and mid-1990s. Small cabinet in size, this is a really fine Pyromorphite from this classic British occurrence. Ex David Hardman collection (no. 2184).
