Elmwood Fluorite/Sphalerite

The Elmwood Mine, located near Carthage in Smith County, Tennessee is famous among collectors for producing world-class mineral specimens. Its fluorite crystals—often rich purple cubes—are celebrated for their clarity and gemmy luster, frequently perched atop deep reddish-brown “Ruby Jack” sphalerite. Golden calcite from Elmwood occurs as intricate scalenohedral and “butterfly twin” formations, sometimes intergrown with barite or quartz, creating striking display pieces. Although large-scale mining focused on zinc, miners clandestinely collected these exceptional specimens, ensuring that Elmwood’s legacy endures as one of the most renowned localities for fluorite, calcite, and sphalerite in the world.
