Australian Azurite "Sun"

Azururite “suns” from the Malbunka Copper Mine in the Areyonga region of Australia’s Northern Territory are distinctive, flattened rosettes of deep blue azurite that formed between layers of kaolinite-rich siltstone when copper-bearing hydrothermal fluids precipitated carbonate around clay grains, forcing the mineral to grow radially into circular “sun” shapes on a white matrix. Unique to this Australian locality, specimens like this are prized for their brilliant color, rare morphology, and the striking contrast between the vivid blue azurite and the pale kaolinite background.
