Stannite with Zinkenite
The association of Stannite crystals and acicular Zinkenite appears to be unique to San José mine in Oruro Department, Bolivia and was from a limited find at around the time of World War 2. Reputedly, only a handful of specimens were recovered, but because Stannite crystals of any sort are extremely rare and the combination of Stannite with Zinkenite is unique, these specimens have become true collectors items. This small miniature specimen from that find is from the superb systematic collection assembled by brothers Martin and Michael Günther (1951-2007 & 1956-2021) who were meticulous in hunting down rare species and rare combinations of species. Not only is the Stannite well crystallized - as dull, dark grey equant crystals (to 3 or 4 mm) and aggregates - but the Zinkenite forms long crystals (to 2 cm) too. Not only that, but the whole sample is made up of this two-species combo. The sample is mounted on a small acryllic cube for display and handling. An important rarity from Bolivia.
