Exceptional specimen of sharp Cheery-red Rhodochrosite on Tetrahedrite & Quartz
Nearly two dozen lustrous and translucent "rhombs" of pink-red Rhodochrosite are attractively scattered on a metallic gray plate of Tetrahedrite crystals on this gorgeous piece from the Sweet Home Mine. The two prominent Rhodochrosites on this piece measure 2.7 and 1.9 cm across, and the numerous other "rhombs" measure between 3 mm and 1 cm. The large crystal is over an inch and is very visually prominent. All of the Rhodochrosite crystals on this piece are gemmy, razor-sharp with excellent pink-red color, and are well isolated on the Tetrahedrite matrix. Small crystals of colorless needle Quartz add contrast to the piece and add to the overall aesthetics. The piece is in excellent condition, with only minor contacting around the periphery. This is an important Sweet Home Rhodochrosite from the Tetrahedrite Pocket and would date to the late 1990s. Such specimens are not readily available with all the attributes this piece has, including aesthetics, condition, color, and luster. Lastly, it needs to be pointed out that this is an older specimen, from the 1990s, without the kinds of repairs and restorations and lab treatments that developed later. This is natural as it gets, natural perfection and sharpness, natural color, and has no damage or repairs. As a final bonus, there are bright orange glows when you look under UV light, revealing Apatite within the matrix-a superb specimen for the size and style from the classical era of mining in Colorado. This top specimen comes with an engraved base.
Location: From the Tetrahedrite Pocket, Sweet Home Mine, Alma, Park County, Colorado.
