Topaz with Smoky Quartz
This is a 19th century classic from the Nerchinsk Gem mines at Adun-Cholon Range in Eastern-Siberia, Russia. Known for centuries, material from this remote part of Russia is seen in all major older museums, and is quite distinctive with its combination of Smoky Quartz crystals and crusts of smaller waterclear gemmy Topaz crystals. Occasionally, specimens from this deposit feature scattered very large wedge-shaped Topaz crystals amongst the bed of smaller, gemmier, crystals, but this lovely larger display specimen features just the smaller glassy crystals (and Smoky Quartz). The Smoky Quartz crystals reach 2 cm in length and are the typical dappled brown and greyish colour and slightly frosted. The Topaz crystals are highly reflective, very glassy, and well formed, reaching 3 to 4 mm in size. It comes with a small 19th century handwritten label documenting it as "Topaz" from "Ural" and a date (1884). Ural was a locality commonly used for early specimens from Siberia, simply as it was the direction in which material was traded westwards to the rest of Russia and the western world. A fine old-time classic from one of the most important early Topaz localities.
