Spessartine
This is a world-class Spessartine specimen with large, colourful, glassy dodecahedral crystals richly carpeting a piece of granitic matrix. Rich deep marmalade-orange in colour, with intense lighting these crystals become fiery orange in colour, with bright internal reflections. Individually the crystals reach 9 mm across but it is the fact that most of the crystals are above 8 mm across and totally damage-free which makes this so spectacular. It is from the Wushan Spessartine mine - reportedly a generic name for a series of pits and quarries near Wushan, Tongbei, from where Spessartine crystals occur in miarolitic cavities in granite. At small cabinet size this piece displays exceptionally well, and is certainly one of the best I have seen from the Tongbei area. As worldwide Spessartine specimens go, this is a masterpiece.
