Axinite-(Fe)
The remote Puiva Mount deposit near Saranpaul in Prepolar Ural, Western-Siberia, Russia is one of the world's most famous 'Alpine'-type mineral occurrences and generally considered the world-leader for Axinite-(Fe). It has produced some colossal crystals but it is their colour and immaculate glassy form which sets them apart from pretty much everywhere else. These amazing crystals came out in a wave during the 1980s and 1990s but were reportedly collected earlier, meaning that the supply stopped very quickly and has never resumed. This small cabinet specimen displays a less-often seen form of Axinite-(Fe) from Puiva Mount, that of bed of slightly more elongated bladed crystals. Still richly coloured, and very glassy, some of the crystals grade into an unusual pinkish red colour at their base. Like a small spiky hedgehog, the crystals rise up outwards from a small bed of rock matrix. The largest crystals reach over 1 cm in length which is not large from Puiva Mount by any means, but it is the overall richness and aesthetic display quality which makes this piece special.
