Spessartine on Smoky Quartz
The combination of glassy orange Spessartine garnet crystals on a background of glossy black Quartz makes for a really fun display. At 5.2 cm tall, the single, matrixless prismatic Quartz crystal is itself a rather nice specimen, especially when intensely illuminated from behind when its rich smoky brown colour shines through. Add to this the sparse scattering of small (up to 4 mm across) bright orange, glassy, dodecahedral Spessartine crystals and its character really stands out. Of course, this association can only be from one place - Wushan Spessartine mine near Tongbei in Fujian Province, China. A really lovely miniature specimen, full of detail.
