A beautiful example of this iconic classic form of Calcite crystal from 1st Sovetskii mine, Dalnegorsk, Kavalerovo Mining District, Primorskiy Kray, Russia. For such a common mineral it is extremely unusual to have a form, or shape of crystal so distinctive of one occurrence, but that is exactly what this is, with a very short trigonally terminated prism. Small cabinet in size, the Calcite crystal, or crystals - as it is slightly twinned - are full of character and displays excellently from the front. The base and lower part of the rear are fracture surfaces, either where it was previously attached to matrix, or cleavage surfaces. Internally, the Calcite crystal is transparent to translucent, full of a myriad of internal reflections. Externally, its surfaces are glassy to silky, often displaying fine natural growth lines. Two protrusions in the form of aggregates of small beige-coloured scalenohedral Calcite crystals add to the beauty and personality of this fine specimen. No new material has come from Dalnegorsk since the 1990s, indicating that this is indeed an older classic.
