Chalcocite
Chalcocite, a copper sulfide that is rare for Tsumeb, is highly sought-after by collectors and it is almost unknown from Tsumeb. This fan-shaped cluster is composed of flattened crystals a little over 1 cm in size, with the surface texture and coloration being a strong identifier. The majority of the Chalcocites surfaces are a mix of either a grey-black, a sparkly, metallic deep-blue, some lighter, copper-colored areas, and finally areas with a definite, blue iridescence. The sparkly blue areas and the blue iridescence are classic for Chalcocite. This is a fine thumbnail of an important species for an even more important locality, made all the better by the great details embodied in the piece. The closer you look, the more you find to appreciate. "Old Tsumeb," to be sure. Dr. Erika Pohl-Ströher - 31568. A good Chalcocite thumbnail from ANY locale. Special, though, for this one. Note - the styrofoam attached was removed after photography.
